Gift registries are no longer restricted to celebrating engagements, weddings and the arrival of a new baby. Increasingly, as people have most of the things they need and gifts are becoming more expensive, many people are creating personalised gift registries for all sorts of occasions to indicate what they would really like rather than taking a chance with the traditional ‘surprise approach’ to giving and receiving gifts.
According to Joseph Renzi, CEO of the gift registry OurWishingWell.com, there was exceptional growth in the online gift registry sector in 2007. The number of people who registered a personal gift registry on OurWishingWell.com increased by more than 300% in a year.
Renzi says the increased popularity of online gift registries is driven by three main factors: a maturing Internet audience that is spending more time online; the realisation that many people already have most of the items they need; and many people are seeking large gifts that are too expensive for one person to buy. A special feature of OurWishingWell.com is that several people can contribute an amount of money towards the purchase of a large item, rather than giving an individual gift.
Gift registries allow the hosts of any special occasion to create a wish-list of gifts and invite their guests to consider these gifts. The gifts could be for a child’s christening, a birthday party, a house warming, a charity fundraiser, or even for Christmas.
Many Australians are embracing online gift registries at very busy times such as Christmas because they are not limited to gifts from a particular store. And friends and family members from all over the world can make cash contributions toward an item on the registry. |
